Today there are millions of expatriates — people living abroad for work, retirement, school, and proximity to families. These expatriates aren’t quite ready to give everything up from their homeland. They want to feel connected with their native community and watching homegrown TV in their own language from abroad can make all the difference.

Video service providers are undergoing dramatic change. New competitors and big established players are taking over and dominating the market. Feature wars are rampant. From providing more content to offering viewers more choice, and from linear TV to live and on-demand Internet services, consumers are changing the way they watch content, and video service providers are scrambling to keep up with the latest trends.

Choice and independence. This is what today’s video consumers are demanding. In fact, according to a study by TiVo last year, some 77% of consumers want a-la-carte TV and aren’t interested in paying for expensive TV packages with channels they don’t watch.

Customer expectations for value-added services, heightened competition due to the emergence of FinTechs, a range of new payment-enabling technologies and an ever-changing regulatory landscape have led to the development of an open and collaborative payments ecosystem.

Entitlement management can be a strategic asset to video service providers. The runaway growth of digital content, everywhere connectivity, cloud, and proliferation of multiple devices have all contributed to changing the game on content consumption.

No one has a crystal ball. Of course, that doesn’t stop any of us from offering up our insights. We thought we would share our insights with you on what we predict will be happening, or not happening, in the video services provider market in 2018 — from our perspective of course.
